Treatment for Leg Spider & Thread Veins

Professional assessment and personalised advice for small, visible veins on the legs

Treatment for Leg Spider and Thread Veins in Manchester & Liverpool

Professional assessment and personalised advice for small, visible veins on the legs

Spider veins and thread veins are small red, blue or purple blood vessels that become visible close to the surface of the skin. They commonly appear on the thighs, calves and around the ankles. Although they are usually harmless, some people feel self-conscious about their appearance—particularly when wearing shorts, dresses or swimwear.

At Jaime Correia Aesthetics, your journey begins with a detailed face-to-face consultation. Jaime will assess the veins, discuss your medical history and determine whether a cosmetic treatment may be appropriate or whether further medical or vascular assessment would be safer.

Treatment is never automatically recommended. Your safety, suitability and expectations will always come first.

Spider Veins

What Are Spider Veins and Thread Veins?

Spider veins—medically known as telangiectasia—are small, widened blood vessels that can form fine lines, branches or web-like patterns beneath the skin.

They are different from varicose veins, which are usually larger, raised or twisted veins. Spider veins are generally flatter and may be red, purple or blue.

They can develop for several reasons, including:

  • Genetic or family tendency

  • Hormonal changes

  • Pregnancy

  • Ageing

  • Prolonged periods of standing or sitting

  • Previous injury or surgery

  • Increased pressure within the leg veins

  • An underlying problem with venous circulation

It is not always possible to identify a single cause. Treating existing veins also cannot prevent new ones from developing in the future.

Why Is a Consultation Important?

Not every visible vein is suitable for cosmetic treatment. Thread veins can sometimes be associated with larger varicose veins or an underlying circulation problem.

During your consultation, Jaime will examine the distribution, colour and size of the visible vessels. He will also ask about symptoms and relevant medical history, including:

  • Pain, aching, heaviness or swelling

  • Previous varicose-vein treatment

  • Previous deep-vein thrombosis or blood clots

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Current medication

  • Allergies

  • Migraine history

  • Reduced mobility

  • Circulatory or vascular conditions

  • Previous reactions to injections

  • Recent surgery or long-distance travel

If your veins are raised, extensive or accompanied by pain, swelling, skin changes or other concerning symptoms, you may be advised to consult your GP or a vascular specialist before proceeding.

When Further Medical Assessment May Be Needed

A cosmetic thread-vein consultation is not a substitute for vascular investigation.

You may require assessment by your GP or a vascular specialist if you have:

  • Large, raised or twisted varicose veins

  • Persistent leg pain, aching or heaviness

  • One-sided leg swelling

  • Skin discolouration around the ankle

  • Varicose eczema

  • A leg ulcer or wound that is not healing

  • A history of deep-vein thrombosis

  • Bleeding from a vein

  • Sudden redness, heat, tenderness or swelling

  • Evidence of poor circulation

Sudden one-sided swelling or calf pain may require urgent medical attention. Chest pain or breathlessness associated with leg swelling requires emergency assessment.

Treatment Options for Leg Spider Veins

Following an appropriate consultation, Jaime will explain the options that may be suitable for the type and pattern of veins present.

One option that may be discussed for selected small leg veins is microsclerotherapy. This is a clinical procedure in which a prescribed sclerosant is carefully introduced into suitable vessels using a very fine needle.

The solution irritates the inner lining of the treated vessel, causing its walls to close. Over time, the body gradually breaks down the treated vessel and blood is naturally redirected through other functioning veins.

Because the medicine used is prescription-only, suitability can only be determined following an individual medical assessment. Treatment is not guaranteed to be appropriate or prescribed.

What Happens During an Appointment?

If treatment is considered clinically suitable and has been prescribed, the skin is cleansed and the relevant veins are identified.

Very fine needles are used to introduce small amounts of the prescribed solution into selected vessels. Several injections may be required, depending on the number and distribution of the veins.

You may experience mild stinging, itching or warmth during an injection. Compression may then be applied according to your individual treatment plan.

Appointment length depends on the size and number of areas being addressed. Treating both legs or extensive networks of veins may require more than one appointment.

When Will I See a Difference?

Results are not immediate. Treated vessels may initially look darker or more noticeable, and temporary bruising or localised inflammation can occur.

The veins should gradually fade as the body processes them. This usually happens over several weeks, although some vessels may take longer.

Some veins may respond better than others. More than one session may be needed, and complete clearance cannot be promised. New spider veins may also develop in the future, even when previously treated vessels have responded well.

A review allows progress to be assessed before any additional session is considered.

How Many Sessions Might I Need?

The number of sessions varies considerably. It depends on:

  • The number of veins

  • Their size and depth

  • The area being treated

  • How the individual vessels respond

  • Whether there are underlying feeder or varicose veins

  • Your treatment goals

patients may be satisfied following one session, while others may require a planned course. Additional treatment is only considered after the area has been given sufficient time to settle.

Aftercare

You will receive personalised aftercare instructions based on your assessment and treatment.

Your advice may include:

  • Wearing compression hosiery for the recommended period

  • Walking regularly to encourage normal circulation

  • Avoiding prolonged periods of inactivity

  • Avoiding strenuous exercise for the period advised

  • Avoiding hot baths, saunas and excessive heat initially

  • Protecting the area from strong sunlight

  • Not picking or rubbing treated areas

  • Following any travel advice given during consultation

  • Contacting the clinic if you develop unexpected or worsening symptoms

The exact compression and activity instructions can vary, so please follow the guidance provided specifically for you rather than general advice found online.

Microsclerotherapy is a clinical procedure and is not free from risk. Expected or relatively common effects may include:

  • Temporary stinging or discomfort

  • Redness, itching or swelling

  • Bruising

  • Tenderness along a treated vessel

  • Temporary hard or lumpy areas

  • Darkening or brown pigmentation over the vessel

  • Fine new vessels developing around the treated area

  • Incomplete improvement

  • Recurrence or development of new veins

Less common or rare complications can include:

  • Persistent pigmentation

  • Skin blistering, ulceration or tissue damage

  • Infection

  • Allergic reaction

  • Inflammation or clotting within a superficial vein

  • Deep-vein thrombosis

  • Pulmonary embolism

This list is not exhaustive. Your individual risks, benefits and alternatives will be discussed before consent and before any medicine is prescribed.

Who May Not Be Suitable?

Treatment may need to be postponed or may not be appropriate if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Have an active infection in the treatment area

  • Have a known allergy to the proposed medicine

  • Have significant arterial or venous disease

  • Have a current or recent blood clot

  • Have poorly controlled health conditions

  • Have limited mobility

  • Are unable to comply with compression or aftercare

  • Have symptoms that require vascular investigation

  • Have unrealistic expectations about the likely outcome

Suitability is determined individually. An alternative opinion or referral may be recommended where appropriate.

Clinical Care With Safety at Its Centre

Your consultation and care are provided by Jaime Correia, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Independent Prescriber with more than two decades of NHS experience.

Every patient is assessed individually. Jaime will consider your medical history, the characteristics of the veins and whether treatment can be offered safely. If the presentation falls outside the scope of a cosmetic thread-vein service, you will be advised to seek the appropriate medical or vascular assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are spider veins and thread veins the same thing?

The terms are frequently used interchangeably. Both generally describe small red, blue or purple vessels that are visible near the surface of the skin.

Do you treat facial thread veins with the same procedure?

No. The assessment and treatment options for facial vessels can differ from those used for leg veins. This page relates specifically to spider and thread veins on the legs.

Can you treat large varicose veins?

This service is intended for selected small leg veins. Large, raised or symptomatic varicose veins may require assessment by a GP or vascular specialist and possibly an ultrasound examination.

Is treatment painful?

Patients commonly describe brief stinging or mild discomfort during individual injections. Sensitivity varies between people and between treatment areas.

Will all the veins disappear?

No practitioner should guarantee complete clearance. Some vessels may fade significantly, some may improve only partially and others may require further treatment. New thread veins may develop over time.

How quickly will the veins fade?

Improvement normally develops gradually over several weeks. The area can initially appear bruised or darker before it begins to settle.

How many appointments will I need?

This depends on the number and pattern of veins and how they respond. Some patients need one session, while others may require a series of treatments separated by an appropriate healing period.

Will I need to wear compression stockings?

Compression may be recommended following treatment. The type of hosiery and length of time it should be worn will be explained as part of your individual plan.

Can I exercise afterwards?

Walking is commonly encouraged, but strenuous exercise and prolonged heat exposure may need to be avoided initially. You will receive precise aftercare instructions for your circumstances.

Can I fly after treatment?

Please discuss any planned flights or extended journeys during your consultation. Jaime will provide advice based on the proposed procedure, your medical history and your individual clotting risk.

Can the veins come back?

A successfully treated vessel may remain closed, but treatment cannot prevent other veins from developing. Genetics, hormones, pregnancy, ageing and underlying venous pressure can all contribute to future thread veins.

Can I have treatment while pregnant?

Cosmetic leg-vein treatment is generally postponed during pregnancy. Pregnancy-related veins may also improve after delivery, so reassessment at a later date is usually more appropriate.

What should I do if one leg suddenly becomes painful or swollen?

Sudden pain or swelling in one leg requires prompt medical assessment because it can indicate a blood clot. Contact NHS 111 or seek urgent medical assistance. Call 999 if leg symptoms occur with chest pain, breathlessness or coughing up blood.
